Manhattan Dominates Iona In Spring Opener

The Manhattan Women's Rowing team opened the spring season with a bang, sweeping rival Iona on the Orchard Beach Lagoon.
 
"It was a great start for the team this weekend," said Head Coach Alex Canale. "Right down to our novices, everyone got the job done and picked up where we left off in the fall. We know the conference results this weekend were fast, so we are excited to get back to work for a few days before the Sacred Heart Invitational."

In the varsity 8, Manhattan clocked a 7:17.6 to breeze past Iona, which posted a mark of 7:33.2. Comprising the Jaspers' crew was Rebecca Arcomano (Sr., Saugerites, NY / John A. Coleman Catholic), Kate Sexton (Jr., Wrentham, MA / King Philip Regional), Rachel Foertch (So., Syracuse, NY / C.W. Baker), Meredith Domaleski (Jr., Cutchogue, NY / Bishop McGann Mercy), Elizabeth McCabe (Jr., Alexandria, VA / Bishop Ireton), Ella O'Brien (So., Hadley, MA / Hopkins Academy) and Emily Hughes (Fr.) with Zoe Nikolopoulos (Jr., Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) manning the stroke, and coxswain Shannon Gleba (So., Midland Park, NJ / Immaculate Heart).

In the second varsity 8, Manhattan dominated the action, recording a time of 7:35.3 to Iona's 8:38.7. In the boat for Manhattan was Shannon Forty (Jr., Westford, MA / Westford Academy), Allison Eichhorn (Jr., Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown), Lauryn Hughes (Fr., New York, NY / Clarkstown South), Leah McGovern (Sr., Floral Park, NY / Sacred Heart Academy), Lisa Dominguez (Santo Domingo, DR / Bronx Leadership (NY)), Elyse Holmes (Fr.), Jaclyn Leighton (Jr., Wilkes-Barre, PA / Holy Redeemer) with Alia Flanigan (Sr., Sparta, NJ / Sparta) manning the stroke, and coxswain Carra Toner (Bel Air, MD / C. Milton Wright).
 
The varsity 4 of  Alexa Schmidt (So., Emerson, NJ / Emerson), Caridad Price (Sr., Bergenfield, NJ / Bergenfield), Maria Blas-Perez (So., Woodstock, NY / John A. Coleman Catholic), stroke Kerry Brosnan (So., Mahopac, NY / Kennedy Catholic) and coxswain Ashley Santana (So.) won in a time of 8:35.8, easily outdistancing Iona by over 22 seconds.
 
Manhattan will return to action in the Sacred Heart Invitational on Saturday, April 13.
