Rutherford, NY - The Manhattan Women's Rowing team turned in an impressive season-opening performance at the Head of the Passaic Regatta to begin the fall portion of the program's schedule.
The Jaspers were looking to stretch their legs so to speak after a long time away from the race course, and did exactly that.
In its first action of the season, the Varsity 4's placed first, fourth and seventh, with the first-place crew besting Vassar College by 21 seconds to win that event for the first time.
The Varsity 8's went out in the afternoon looking to defend last years win at this event, and did so in style first and second a the field that included two conference rivals as well as Vassar College. Manhattan's Varsity 8+ rowed the course in 14:21 winning by a margin of nearly a minute. New to the Varsity 8+ this year in the two seat is freshman
Morgan McLean, who due to some last minute changes also steered the Novice 8+ and 4+, coxing for the first time in her rowing career. Also making an appearance in the Varsity 8+ for the first time was junior
Kerry Brosnan (Mahopac, NY / Kennedy Catholic) at the four seat.
The Novice 4+ team raced the final race of the day placing second and third in the event, just behind Sarah Lawrence College and ahead of Maritime. The Novice 8+ raced earlier in the day, and despite incurring some breakage mid race were able to finish the first race of their careers as Jaspers.
"We have a great group of walk-on's this year, evident by their results today and I love their desire to get back out on the race course," said head coach
Alex Canale. "I have no doubt they will be great contributors to our team goals going forward. On the varsity side of the program, we got a good feel for what is working and what we need to focus on before heading to Boston next week. I am proud that everyone came out today with the clarity and focus necessary to execute a successful race day and look forward to developing that efficiency and speed as we move through four straight weeks of races. Another great year to be a Jasper is ahead!"
Jaspers return to the water Saturday, October 19 for The Head of the Charles in Boston.
