Riverdale, NY - With several ceremonial hammer swings Monday morning, demolition officially began on Manhattan's Gaelic Park Athletic Center (GPAC), the new locker room, office, and training room facility for the Jaspers' outdoor sports set to open this fall.
Coaches from Manhattan's men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, and softball teams, along with Athletic Director
Marianne Reilly and several department administrators, gathered for the groundbreaking, officially opening the project to construction. Â
Â
The GPAC project will include the installation of sport-specific locker rooms for varsity teams that currently do not have a space of their own. The athletic department will also create a state-of-the-art, on-site athletic training room - in addition to the athletic training facility located at Draddy Gymnasium - and a lounge/film room where student-athletes can study, conduct meetings, and strengthen overall team chemistry. The new space is located just steps from Gaelic Park at the South Campus along Tibbett Avenue, across from Leo Hall and the new Engineering and Science Center.
Â
The GPAC project is estimated to cost $1.5 million to complete, and to ensure that the project is fully supported by private funding, the athletic department is soliciting contributions throughout the spring and summer. Numerous support levels and naming opportunities are available for corporations, individuals, and groups, so that all members of Jasper Nation who are eager to participate are able to make an impact.
Â
Contributions to the GPAC project will enhance the overall student-athlete experience at Manhattan College, while elevating the school's reputation as New York City's premier Lasallian institution.
