RIVERDALE, N.Y. - On the first day of the Brother Jasper Invitational at Draddy Gymnasium, Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) of the Manhattan College women's track & field team qualified for the ECAC Championships in the pentathlon. Needing to run the final event, the 800 meters, faster than 2:40 to reach the ECAC-qualifying standard of 3450 points, Nyback finished in a time of 2:39.30, giving her a total of 3457 points.
After the first day of the heptathlon, Tom Bechert (Munich, Germany) was on pace for a school record. Bechert had a score of 3122 points thru four events, while teammate Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) was sitting in second place with 2853 points.
Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) qualified for the IC4A Championships in the pole vault, winning the competition with a leap of 5.00 meters (16 feet, 4¾ inches). Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) won the men's shot put with a toss of 15.69 m (51'5¾), while Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) placed third, and first among collegians, in the men's weight throw (17.62 m, 57'9¾).
On the women's side, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) ran the 60 meter hurdles in 8.74 seconds to qualify for the ECAC Championships. It was also a good day for Alina Koenigs (Moenchengladbach, Germany). She took first place in the shot put (11.28 m, 37'0¼), weight throw (11.05 m, 36'3) and long jump (5.25 m, 17'2¾).
Day two of the meet gets underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
