PROSPECTIVE STUDENT ATHLETES
In accordance with bylaw 13.02.12, the NCAA's definition of a prospective student-athlete is anyone who has started classes for the ninth grade (7th grade in Men's Basketball). A student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual's relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally. An individual remains a prospective student-athlete until one of the following occurs (whichever is earlier):
(a) The individual officially registers and enrolls in a minimum full-time program of studies and attends classes in any term of a four-year collegiate institution's regular academic year (excluding summer);
(b) The individual participates in a regular squad practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution that occurs before the beginning of any term;
(c) The individual officially registers, enrolls and attends classes during the certifying institution's summer term prior to his or her initial full-time enrollment at the certifying institution; or
(d) The individual reports to an institutional orientation session that is open to all incoming students within 14 calendar days prior to the opening day of classes of a regular academic year term. INFORMATION FOR ALL NCAA DIVISION I PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES
Each year, the NCAA publishes a Guide for College Bound Student-Athletes. This provides a general overview of the progression from being a high school athlete to a student-athlete in college. A link to this guide is provided below.
Any student-athlete who enters a Division I collegiate institution and wishes to participate in intercollegiate athletics, must be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center. We encourage you to begin the initial eligibility certification process as soon as possible. Delay in completing the process may affect your ability to practice and compete upon your arrival at Manhattan College. We would also encourage you to consult with your high school guidance office to check on your core-courses and grade point average in those core-courses. To begin the certification process, you need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center by completing a Student Release Form. This can be accomplished via the Internet at the NCAA Eligibility Center website or by obtaining it from the guidance office at your high school.
The academic certification process is different of international prospective student-athletes. We encourage all international prospective student-athletes to register for the NCAA Eligibility Center as early as possible and to work closely with the Manhattan College compliance staff in order to comply with the initial eligibility guidelines. A link to the Guide For International Academic Standards can be found below.
For students who will be entering college beginning in August 2016 or after, the initial eligibility guidelines will have changed. Please make note of the changes outlined in the Initial Eligibility reference sheet listed below.
