Riverdale, N.Y. - The World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) held a portion of their 2011 tournament at Manhattan College on Wednesday as eight teams competed in an Irish Rules Football tournament. The tournament, held at Gaelic Park, featured members of the New York Police and Fire Departments as well as teams representing police and firemen from Northern Ireland, Australia, and others.
Both the NYPD and FDNY received medals in the tournament yesterday with the city's finest taking the silver medal and New York's bravest walking away with the bronze. The team from Northern Ireland won the tournament, defeating the NYPD in the finals.
Gaelic football is played on a field that involves a blended style of soccer, and rugby with each team having seven players including a goalie. The object is to punt the ball through the uprights for a point, or in to the net for a goal (worth three points).
The WPFG is an annual international competition featuring teams representing public heroes from across the country. The venue changes countries yearly and is being held in New York to coincide with the tenth anniversary of 9/11. It is the second largest multi-sport event in the world next to the Summer Olympics.
