Aliann Pompey Wins Bronze Medal at Commonwealth Games

DELHI, India - On Friday evening at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, former Manhattan College track & field star Aliann Pompey won the bronze medal in the women's 400 meters at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.  Representing Guyana, Pompey ran a season-best time of 51.65 seconds to earn her second career Commonwealth Games medal.  She was the gold medalist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England.

Botswana's Amantle Montsho, who posted the fastest time in both the first round and the semifinals, set a Commonwealth Games record of 50.10 seconds to take the gold medal.  Folashade Abugan of Nigeria won the silver in a time of 51.39 seconds.  Pompey's bronze was Guyana's second all-time Commonwealth Games medal (her gold in 2002 was the first).

"She started off her international career by winning a gold at the Commonwealth Games," said Manhattan Assistant Coach Joe Ryan, who's also Pompey's personal coach, "and it's amazing to see her still doing it eight years later.  It's an amazing performance, especially considering she wasn't 100 percent healthy."

Pompey concluded her 2010 season at the Commonwealth Games.  In addition to her Commonwealth bronze, she made the final at the World Indoor Championships in February and won the silver at the Central American and Caribbean Games in July.

Started in 1930 as the "British Empire Games," the Commonwealth Games bring together athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations (primarily former British colonies and territories) every four years in the non-Olympic even year.
