DELHI, India - At the 2010 Commonwealth Games on Thursday, former Manhattan College track & field star Aliann Pompey finished second in her semifinal heat to qualify for the final in the women's 400 meters. The 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Pompey, a native of Guyana, will run for gold on Friday at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
On a very hot evening in Delhi, Pompey completed her semifinal in a time of 51.70 seconds, the second-fastest time of the semifinals and more than half a second better than her first round time. Botswana's Amantle Montsho, who was also in Pompey's first round heat, won the heat in 50.80 seconds, the only sub-51-second time of the day.
The final is scheduled for 8:50 a.m. Eastern time (6:20 p.m. in Delhi) on Friday. Pompey has drawn lane 5 for the final, sandwiched between her top two competitors, Christine Amertil of the Bahamas (lane 4) and Montsho (lane 6).
Originally known as the "British Empire Games," the Commonwealth Games bring together athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations (primarily former British colonies and territories) every four years in the even year between Olympics.
