It has been a busy early part of the weekend for Manhattan College track and field athletes past and present.
Lady Jasper alum Aliann Pompey (Manhattan '99) on Friday took fifth place in the 400m run at the prestigious DN Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden. Competing against the top performers in the world, she ran 51.49 seconds from lane 1 and is currently ranked ninth in the 400m in the IAAF world rankings.
Pompey is being coached by Manhattan assistant track and field coach Joe Ryan, who was just accredited by the country of Guyana as a coach for the upcoming World Track and Field Championships in Berlin. He will leave on August 10th with Pompey and prepare Pompey for the competition. Also leaving for Berlin will be Manhattan track and field head coach Dan Mecca, who is accredited as a coach by the U.S. and will be there to coach Jasper alum Jake Freeman (Manhattan '04) who is representing the U.S. in the hammer throw. Milan Jotanovic (Manhattan '09) will also be at the World Championships representing Serbia in the shot put. Pompey, Freeman and Jotanovic will all compete August 15th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. (4 to 8 a.m. Eastern time) at the "worlds."
In other news this weekend, also in Sweden, Lady Jasper rising senior Malin Marmbrandt, with a mark of 12.65m, set a personal record Saturday in the triple jump to place sixth at the Swedish National Championships. Her mark puts her second all-time at Manhattan College. Additionally at the Swedish championships, Jasper rising sophomore Karl-Erik Ludvigsson took seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.14m
Also on Saturday, in Serbia, Manhattan alum Zoran Loncar (Manhattan '07) won the Serbian National Championship in the hammer throw with a mark of 60.24 meters.
And at the Shore AC Invitational Hammer Throw event held at West Point, Freeman took gold with a mark of 73.94 meters, while Jasper rising senior Seid Mujanovic took silver with a throw of 63.58 meters.
Morever, Jasper rising sophomore Albert Johnson III grabbed a bronze medal Sunday for the U.S. team at the PanAm Junior Championships being held in Trinidad with a personal best mark of 15.89 (see separate article).
And Monday, Marmbrandt and incoming freshman Andrea Nyback both take part in the long jump at the Sweden National Championships.
