MANHATTAN TRACK AND FIELD ALUMNUS ED BOWES ENSHRINED INTO HIGH SCHOOL COACHES HALL OF FAME

New York, N.Y. (February 28, 2007)?Ed Bowes has worn various hats throughout his track and field career from Manhattan College harrier to high school coach to New York City Marathoner.  As of Tuesday night, Bowes has been given another hat to wear labeled “Hall of Famer.”  The Armory Foundation inducted Bowes into the newly founded High School Coaches Hall of Fame at its New Balance Track & Field Center.

Bowes, who graduated from Manhattan in 1964 and is currently the President of Jasper Track and Field's Spiked Shoe Club, is now one of only three members in the Hall of Fame, which came into existence last year.

Upon his graduation from Manhattan, Bowes began his legendary teaching and coaching career at Bishop Loughlin and remained there until his retirement in 2003.  While at the Brooklyn high school, Bowes coached three national championship boys relay teams:  the distance medley in 1975, the distance medley in 1981, and the 4x800m in 1981.

In 1973, Bowes founded the Manhattan College High School Cross Country Invitational, which is now the largest cross country competition in the United States and still under the direction of Bowes.  This past fall, more than 11,600 athletes from 18 different states competed at the meet, which is held at Van Cortlandt Park.  Bowes also retains the Meet Director position for the 53-year-old Bishop Loughlin Games, a post he has held since 1983.

As a competitor, Bowes has run the New York City Marathon on 12 different occasions, while also contributing to nine of the New York Athletic Club's national championship teams.
