PHILADELPHIA – It was a successful first day for the Manhattan College women's track & field team at the 123rd edition of the historic Penn Relays on Thursday. Ellinor Persson (Taby, Sweden) finished sixth in the college women's long jump, while the women's 4x100 meter relay squad qualified for the ECAC final at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.
The quartet of Paige Chapman (Abingdon, MD), Kathy Cadet (Endicott, NY), Niasia Boone (Morrisville, PA) and Dayzondra Gonzalez (Monroe, NY) finished third in their heat and 35th overall with a time of 47.66 seconds. The Jaspers were one of nine teams to advance to the ECAC final, which will take place at 1:07 p.m. on Friday.
In the college women's long jump, Persson got out to a distance of 5.84 meters (19 feet, two inches). That effort was good for sixth place, but just three centimeters behind the third-place finisher. Charlene Pohl (Bisingen, Germany) also competed in the college women's long jump, placing 26th with a leap of 5.35 m (17'6¾). Lina Bengtson (Malmo, Sweden), meanwhile, took 14th in the college women's discus with a mark of 44.43 m (145'9).
Friday's events get underway with the men's college discus at 9 a.m. Manhattan also has athletes entered in the men's shot put and men's long jump, as well as the men's shuttle hurdles and women's sprint medley relay, in addition to the women's 4x100 ECAC final.
